Topic: South Africa. You know keyword transformations from Year 9. First you revise used to, comparisons and the passive – then you use the grammar of Unit 1 and some new keywords.

What do you have to do?

Complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the first sentence, using the word given. Do not change the word given. You must use between two and five words, including the word given.

  1. Read sentence 1. What is the important information? Which tense?
  2. Look at the keyword. Which structure do you know with this word? (Help cards below!)
  3. Read sentence 2 before and after the gap. What is already there?
  4. Fill the gap and count the words. 2–5 words? Keyword unchanged? Same meaning?

Example · You mustn’t feed the animals.

KEYWORD: ALLOWED → You ________ feed the animals.

➜ mustn’t = it is forbidden → be not allowed to

✅ You aren’t allowed to feed the animals. 3 words ✓ · ALLOWED unchanged ✓

Look back at Year 9: Keyword Transformation (first steps) and used to.

🇩🇪 Kurz auf Deutsch

Du musst den zweiten Satz so ergänzen, dass er dasselbe bedeutet wie der erste. Das Schlüsselwort darfst du nicht verändern (also nicht allow statt allowed), und du darfst nur 2 bis 5 Wörter schreiben – das Schlüsselwort zählt mit. Achte auf die Zeit: Steht Satz 1 in der Vergangenheit, muss auch deine Lösung in der Vergangenheit stehen (could → were able to).

Task 1 · Revision from Year 9: used to, comparisons, passive
